Job Description Summary

This position conducts advanced computational research in the field of structural engineering. Specifically, the research will use numerical simulation to evaluate the performance of different building systems subjected to natural hazards such as earthquakes, evaluating the effects of modeling approaches and resilience of buildings employing different structural systems. The researcher would require knowledge of structural engineering design, nonlinear numerical structural modeling, and data analytics, including machine learning.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Structural modeling using the OpenSees (Open-Source Earthquake Engineering Simulation) software;
  • Data processing, analysis, and visualization using programming languages such as Matlab and/or Python;
  • Design of steel structural systems for gravity and lateral loading using relevant U.S. codes and standards;
  • Technical writing and preparation of journal articles in the English language using word processors such as Microsoft Word, Latex, or equivalent.

Other Functions:

  • Familiarity with applying machine learning and other advanced statistical methods to large datasets;
  • Experience working with experimental data from large-scale structural tests, including but not limited to digital image correlation data, strain gage and potentiometer data, LiDAR data, and visual observations;
  • Experience using shell and solid-based finite element software such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS-Dyna, or equivalent.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • PhD in civil engineering, structural engineering, or equivalent.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience in structural engineering design practice and/or hands-on construction and testing of large-scale structural experiments is preferred.

Additional Job Description

Physical Requirements:

Remote work is allowed as all work can be done on the computer. Regular virtual meetings are required.

Accountabilities:

Employee is expected to attend regular weekly meetings with supervisor. Employee may be asked to remotely train undergraduate research students on topics such as use of structural engineering design and analysis software, structural behavior under gravity or lateral loading, interpretation of experimental data, and the like.
