Lead Public Safety Officer

Job Purpose and Reporting Structure:

Under the direction of the Public Safety Manager, the lead Public Safety Officer will schedule and provide direction to security staff on a day-to-day basis. In the absence of the Manager, the lead will assume all responsibilities and lead work of assigned security officers in maintaining security and safety of people and property assigned area of our organization. Trains other security officers in performance of duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



  • Performs all functions of a Public Safety Officer
  • Coordinate the work activities of others PUBLIC Safety Officers as needed.
  • Trains new security officers or other personnel and provides on-going direction.
  • Patrols assigned area on foot, checking for fires, vandalism, suspicious activity or persons, safety/fire hazards and reports circumstances to police and completion of an agency incident report for follow-up actions.
  • Investigates and/or reports hazards, unusual or suspicious circumstances to campus police unit for correction or follow-up actions; maintains contact with campus police.
  • Observes activity and traffic in assigned area to enforce university rules/regulations; alerts visitors of infractions.
  • Assists any persons in building or grounds needing direction or campus information.
  • Escorts people/property to desired destination when monies, documents or safety of property or persons is a concern.
  • Responds to alarms and dispatched calls; decides what actions to take based on situation, facts known and position limitations.
  • Decides when an incident requires written report, and submits to supervisor; HR and Director of Quality may prepare other written reports as directed by supervisor.
  • Lock/Unlocks buildings responding to alarms after hours, and notifying police when necessary.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); in addition, one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of experience in police or security field; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Possession of a Valid Wisconsin class Type D driver's license and insurance is required upon employment.
