Overview
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under the general supervision of the Manager or designee, the Lead Refrigeration and HVAC/R leads trades people, develops work schedules and time estimates for major refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including ice machines, freezers, environmental rooms, and HVAC/R equipment on campus.
Responsibilities
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Repair of all refrigerators, freezers, including cascade and auto cascade freezer systems, walk in coolers and warm rooms back to the manufactures warranty specifications.
- Fix all ice machines, humidifiers, process chill water loops, environmental room alarms, and phone dialers.
- Oversee any refrigerated research equipment repairs.
- Install new freezers, humidifiers, ice machines, and refrigerated incubators.
- Responsible for preventive maintenance inspections and repairs if required.
- Perform maintenance and repair of complex HVAC systems including chillers, roof top units, and geothermal heat pump systems.
- Test HVAC systems for leaks and ensure proper refrigerant levels and system operation.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform necessary repairs to packaged humidifiers, mini splits, heat pumps, and other assigned equipment.
- Complete appropriate documentation ensuring accuracy of data for accreditation and compliance purposes.
- Maintain refrigerant recovery records.
- Instruct staff members on best practices for repairs and proper operation of various equipment.
- Supervise all trades people assigned to specific projects, reviewing performance for effectiveness and conformance with policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- In conjunction with the supervisor, develop work schedule and assign tasks to individual trade people to complete work.
- Prepare cost estimates for work; coordinate purchases of supplies and material with vendors and Facilities accounting staff.
- Prepare and alter inspection methods and schedules for PM as required.
- Interface with other departments to assure work is completed with the least possible disruption to the Medical Center.
- Attending required training.
- Order supplies and unsure availability of parts.
- Must be able to use computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for work assignments and or performing task and recording time and work completion.
- Perform responsibilities of lower-level staff members such as installs, repairs on refrigeration and HVAC/R repairs.
- While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification, where the work or task does not require a specific license.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Trade school graduate, or equivalent experience
- 5 years' experience in the maintenance of domestic and commercial refrigeration installations.
- MA Refrigeration Technicians License and E.P.A Universal Recovery Certificate
- Experience with Microprocessors, PLC boards, and Variable Compressors
- Hot Work Certificate or the ability to obtain within 3 months
- Knowledge of all gases, salts, and other substances used in the refrigeration process.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, blueprints, and schematics.
- Valid driver's license
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Effective communication skills - verbal and written
- Ability to travel to off-site locations
