About the Job

The Mathematics and Statistics Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites applications for temp/casual staff to help Dr. Joe Gallian with the 2024 Summer REU camp. It is a 10 week temporary appointment. The appointment starts June 3rd, 2024. The first week will be virtual, and participants and staff are to be on campus by June 9th, 2024. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to working with a diverse student population. Priority will be given to applicants whose research aligns with faculty at UMD.

Job Duties

  • Assist with all aspects of the REU. Regularly communicate with the undergraduate participants, program alumni who join the presentations, and PI.
  • Arrange mathematical and recreational activities, read manuscripts and provide advice to the participants and monitor their progress.
  • Assist PI with assessing student progress and with finding new research problems.
  • Driver for airport pickups, field trips and to local businesses.
  • Work is 40 hours per week for 10 weeks of the program. You also are required to continue to comply with all licensing, certification, work eligibility, and other requirements of this position as described in the job description.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • At least two years in a PhD program in combinatorics.
  • At least one year of experience in working with high-level undergraduate math students in research.
  • At least two publications in well-regarded journals.
  • Must have experience in Combinatorics at the PhD level and 1 year experience in Math research.
