Job Summary

Central Washington University is recruiting a Maintenance Mechanic 2 to join our Student Union Operations team in Ellensburg, Washington. This role is an important member of our team as they will support Dining services Maintenance for the University. The role is a campus-based position, which means you get to see the lives you are impacting. The Role:

This position independently performs journey-level skilled maintenance and repair in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R) for the Student Union, Recreation Center, Wildcat Shop and Dining areas in the SURC and various Dining locations around campus. In addition, incumbents utilize a general knowledge of several related skilled fields such as preventative maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, flooring and painting. The duties, specific tasks or combinations of tasks are performed professionally and efficiently, incorporating both personal integrity and mutual respect. This position is subject to call backs after regular hours. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

Job Duties

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
- Operate, repair, and preform preventative maintenance on equipment such as industrial air handlers, industrial freezers and walk-in coolers, washers/dryers, industrial refrigeration units, dishwashers, steam cabinets, industrial ovens, and other various commercial restaurant/building equipment. Work includes but is not limited to installation, changing filters, changing belts, repair of air handlers, air flow dampers, sheaves, pulleys, and diagnosis.
- Using Excel, create, update, and maintain a preventative maintenance program for HVAC/R equipment.
- Inspects, maintains and repairs plumbing, heating, water, cooling, refrigeration, sewer and fire suppression systems.
- Operate N light air lighting control system and the operation of the Alerton mechanical notification software by analyzing and maintaining control systems that include electrical, electronic, and pneumatic, electrical and electronic temperature and humidity controls for heating and ventilation systems; repair relays, timers, meters, and switches with local or remote computer control; reads and interprets blueprints.
- Tests, operates and maintains glycol with refractometer in all air handler units.
- Effectively communicate and maintain positive working relations with faculty, staff, students, and the campus community as well as FMD management team.
- Perform work in a manner that provides excellent service with nominal to no inconvenience or disruption for the client.
- Perform quality work that meets or exceeds the expectation and satisfaction of the client.
- Perform work using Best Practices while maintaining compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures to provide a safe workplace.

Perform general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction. Work may include but not limited to:
- General construction work including rough and finish carpentry work; examples include framing walls, install sheetrock and finish trim; install doors and trim. Install roof coatings and repair roofs; install and repair floor coverings, plastic laminates, and ceramic/quarry/marble tile.
- Install and repair carpet, carpet pad, carpet tile, vinyl, rubber cover base, and ceramic/quarry tile. Work includes but is not limited to preparation of surfaces, applications of adhesives, pastes, mortars, and grouts. Cabinet and furniture installation. Fence repair and new installation of fencing. Window and door repair/replacement. Equipment installation.
- General painting and coating work to include surface preparation, tape and mud wall board, application of all types of coatings, and paints utilizing brush, roller, and spray equipment. Install and repair plaster and synthetic plaster.
- Improvement project work on university facilities.
- Perform work on electrical systems such as 110-volt electrical switch and receptacle replacement, electrical connection repair, light fixture repair, hot water heater repair and replacement, repair and replace fractional horsepower motors, maintain, and repair branch panel systems.
- Erect, maintain, use, and dismantle equipment such as scaffolding, ladders, barricades, and temporary fencing. Operate high lift equipment.
- Operate and manage computerized, lighting control and fire suppression systems including adjusting, reprogramming, overriding, and troubleshooting.
- Using building blueprints, troubleshoot building issues as they arise.
- Conduct routine inspections of the building to assure proper operation of equipment and machines.
- Oversight of hanging the banners across University Way.
- Perform work on hot water heating systems.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certifications and/or training in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R).
  • Experience repairing and providing maintenance to commercial restaurant and building equipment.
  • Experience operating High Lifts.
  • Experience and/or education demonstrating a substantial working knowledge of a variety of skilled fields such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, and flooring.
  • Experience operating HVAC and lighting control software systems such as Alerton Compass Operating System and the N light air lighting control operating system.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Experience using Word, Excel, e-mail, and/or similar software applications to produce written correspondence, documentation, create simple reports, receive, and respond to e-mail inquiries, report time, etc.
  • Ability to create a preventive maintenance program for building equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate both orally and in writing in a clear and professional manner.
  • Able to work independently and monitor progress against defined parameters.
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Journey level status in HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, or related fields.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: This position is based on the range 47G of the Washington State Classification Listing, which has a minimum annual salary of $55,224 and maximum annual salary of $64,092. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Schedule/Appointment: Tuesday-Friday, 6:00am-5:00pm (1-hour lunch) / May vary depending on needs of the department / May become swing shift / WFSE Bargaining Unit 1

Working Conditions: This position may work indoors and outdoors, at times in hot/cold/noisy/dirty/wet/confined areas such as mechanical rooms, manholes and excavations, and may need to physically access work areas with the equipment and tools necessary for completion of the job. This often requires standing/crawling/bending/walking/climbing while carrying/pulling/pushing/lifting associated with equipment or tools up to 50 pounds. Occasional call back and overtime is required, and shift work may be required. May need to drive a service vehicle in congested areas. Utilize and wear appropriate personal protection devices such as respirators, ear protection, and eye and face protection and fall protection.

Scheduled hours and days off may vary depending on the needs of the department. May be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. This position is subject to unplanned overtime including emergency call back situations. Occasional travel may be required. The incumbent will work outdoors, including working in inclement weather during daylight and dark hours. In addition, this position will work with and be exposed to machinery, tools, electrical equipment. Will work around all utilities during excavations, maintenance and installations and be exposed to insects that may be in the environment. Must maintain awareness of immediate vicinity in order to recognize, respond to and/or avoid potentially hazardous conditions/surroundings. Must possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools, materials, and equipment necessary to perform functions of the job. This position is considered an essential position and availability will be required to respond to university emergencies.
