Positions in this function obtains blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and capillary collection methods from patients of all ages. Processes specimens by centrifugation and separation. Carries out all duties while respecting member and provider confidentiality.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Performs all duties at the expert level within the Phlebotomist scope of practice
  • Requires little assistance with standard and non-standard requests and solves routine problems independently
  • Conducts clinic assessments for compliance with state and federal health care requirements, and PHSA
  • Oversees remediation and corrective action plans, resulting from internal assessments, audits, compliance reviews and self-identified issues
  • Provides leadership and mentoring for clinic staff and other phlebotomists to ensure patient safety and quality care
  • Trains and mentors other Phlebotomists
  • Promotes positive work environment in the clinic as a culture ambassador
  • Coordinates patient care as directed by provider, and policies/procedures
  • Respects patient confidentiality at all times. Ensures others are also respecting patient confidentiality
  • Performs venipuncture using vacutainer, syringe, and butterfly techniques; capillary punctures using heel and finger stick techniques on patients
  • Collects, identifies, labels, and processes specimens according to protocol
  • Instructs patients on urine collection procedures and allocates urine specimens
  • Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area and ensures preventive maintenance is performed on all equipment and monitors
  • Maintains knowledge of all routine containers and minimum volumes required for specimen collection, and complies with laboratory ordering and billing compliance
  • Processes and submits orders accurately into the computer system
  • Distributes laboratory reports
  • Monitors biohazard waste
  • Adheres to patient confidentiality policy
  • Adheres to the organization and governmental standards, rules, and regulations
  • Prioritizes workload to efficiently provide Providers with the information necessary
  • Performs clerical duties
  • Promotes good customer service and demonstrates appropriate telephone etiquette
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:



  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Current National certification or registration as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist or the ability to obtain the certification within 180 days of employment. Phlebotomists who are hired prior to receiving their certification are expected to perform at the same level as a "certified" Phlebotomist
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine blood and urine tests
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with medical terminology
  • Computer literacy
  • Demonstrated skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation
  • Demonstrated skill in preparing written reports concerning the results of laboratory tests and inputting data into the computer system
  • Demonstrated sill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public
  • Proven good communication and customer service skills
  • Proven ability to maintain all materials for collection
  • This position requires Tuberculosis screening as well as proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis through lab confirmation of immunity, documented evidence of vaccination, or a doctor's diagnosis of disease


Preferred Qualifications:



  • CLA or ASCP or equivalent Certified
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) current


Physical & Mental Requirements:



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to push or pull heavy objects using up to 50 pounds of force
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to use fine motor skills to operate equipment and/or machinery
  • Ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and/or in writing
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to use logical reasoning for simple and complex problem solving
  • Occasionally requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids
