About the role:
The Biologics Research Center (BRC) Cell & Gene Therapy unit at Novartis Biomedical Research in San Diego, California is seeking a motivated Research Scientist II to contribute in early-stage recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy portfolio. BRC is an innovative hub focuses on building new modalities that tackle complex biology and enable the creation of advanced biotherapeutics, siRNAs and cell & gene therapies to improve patients' lives. In collaboration within BRC and with Disease Areas, the Cell & Gene Therapy unit brings viral engineering in AAV gene therapy to create transformative medicine.

The prospective Research Scientist will support early-stage AAV gene therapy pipeline portfolio focusing on downstream manufacture developability of novel AAV capsids, executing early-stage downstream method exploration and building improved process technologies for AAV manufacture.

Your Key Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Perform different scales of purification process including depth filtration, ultracentrifugation, AKTA column chromatography, and TFF unit operations for manufacturing of AVV gene therapy vectors across multiple early-stage programs and disease areas to ensure on time delivery.
* Execute experiments to drive innovative technology and platform evaluation for next generation capsids.
* Perform experiment-related activities including buffer preparation, equipment maintenance, sample labelling and analytical sample submissions.
* Work collaboratively with upstream process development and analytical development teams.
* Engage collaboratively in operational and scientific discussion within internal team
* Assist knowledge transfer and work collaboratively with Technical Research & Development team to advance pipeline programs into clinical phases.
* Prepare protocols, reports, and provide high quality data and electronic notebook documentation.
* Other related duties as assigned.
This position will be located at the San Diego, CA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely.

Role Requirements

Essential Requirements:
*Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related technical field with 3+ years of lab related experience or Master's with a minimum 1 year lab related experience.
*Previous experience with biotech/biopharmaceutical purification processes such as chromatographic separation, depth filtration, tangential flow filtration, adventitious viral clearance, or impurity clearance.
*Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills
*Strong organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to details
Desired Requirements:
*Knowledge in viral gene therapy and previous experience with viral vector process development is preferred

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $80,000-$120,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
