About the role

The Enterprise Risk Management team is looking for an actuary to join the team! Our team is responsible for risk modeling including various types of stress testing and overseeing actuarial model governance and model risk management practices across divisions. The analysis and oversight that we perform spans Symetra's three divisions including life insurance, annuity, and employee benefit products. In this position, you will leverage your knowledge and technical skills to lead and perform in-depth model validations for various product lines using multiple modeling platforms and software, recommend improvements for models based on validation findings, and work with modeling teams across the different actuarial divisions to help implement governance practices and manage model risks. This role will be critical in supporting ongoing model risk management across Symetra.

What you will do



  • Leads, executes, and provides guidance on model validation work across various actuarial divisions at the standard and level of rigor that satisfies Symetra's internal Model Risk Management Policy and any applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Performs annual validations and prepares internal validation reports for Insurance Capital Standard (ICS) modeling and reporting.
  • Performs model validations on a regular basis for the actuarial models used by Symetra's Bermuda entity.
  • Leads independent peer reviews of complex quantitative models used across various business areas and communicates results to model owners, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Assists with the coordination of external model reviews as needed.
  • Provides consultation and support for any follow-up, remediation actions, or questions related to model validation assessments and findings.
  • Partners with Symetra's modeling teams to manage the model inventory and risk assessment ranking tool to help identify high risk models and provide recommendations on which models to validate and the scope and depth of.
  • Partners with Symetra's modeling teams and stakeholders to develop and implement standards for performing model validations and other modeling best practices.
  • Designs test plans or test strategies and builds tools to standardize and aid in model validations.
  • Prepares thorough and detailed reports for documentation and as evidence of review and model validations.
  • Stays current on industry best practices related to model risk management and makes recommendations to management about how to improve Symetra's governance.

Compensation

Salary Range: $121,300 - $202,200 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who you are



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with strong quantitative background including college level mathematics.
  • 5+ years of insurance related actuarial experience.
  • Finished with actuarial exams (FSA), or career ASA with 15+ yrs. experience and strong performance.


  • Strong communication skills, particularly as it relates to communication of technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Proven ability to communicate with senior leadership.
  • Highly skilled in the use of spreadsheets and actuarial modeling software.
  • Advanced knowledge of actuarial concepts and assumptions used for modeling, risk management, pricing, and/or financial reporting.
  • Experienced with automation and process improvement.
  • Ability to solve complex actuarial problems independently in a multi-dimensional context.
  • Significant knowledge of insurance products and the industry.
  • Deep understanding of insurance GAAP and Statutory accounting concepts and of company financials (income statements, balance sheets, investment portfolio, and policyholder reserves).
  • Experienced in a variety of company, industry, and regulatory actuarial issues.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • MG-ALFA experience.
  • PolySystems is highly preferred and GGY-AXIS experience is a plus.
  • Past experience managing or guiding junior actuaries.
  • Proficiency in SQL or Python is preferred.
  • Microsoft Office 365.
