Position Summary:
The Assistant Director, General Accounting and Financial Reporting, under the direction
of the AVP, General Accounting,
provides
accounting support to the university community as well as a business
framework to support the university's educational and program objectives. The Assistant Director is responsible for
the stewardship and oversight of all university, related entities, and agency
accounts other than those related to research grants and contracts, and functions as the liaison to
the university community for all such accounts. The Assistant Director manages the daily accounting
operations, performs month-end closing procedures, compiles the annual
consolidated financial statements, and supervises, trains, and mentors the staff of the General Accounting
Department. In addition to the normal accounting and analysis work, the Assistant
Director also is responsible for management and external reporting,
accounting policies and procedures, special projects, and the provision of services to
affiliates and agency companies.

Essential Functions:
- Assists the AVP, General Accounting to provide the business framework
to ensure compliance with the university's accounting and administrative requirements.
- Manages the daily accounting operations, including manual journal entry review, approval,
and processing.
- Supervises, trains and mentors accounting staff.
- Provides account set-up, oversight and stewardship of university, related entities, and agency accounts, other than those related
to grants and contracts.
- Functions as liaison to the university community for those accounts for
which the AVP has stewardship
responsibility.
- Responsible for the preparation and review of analyses and reconciliations of unrestricted, plant, and agency
funds.
- Prepares
management reports.
- Assists in the development of accounting policies and procedures to
improve the internal control structure of the
university, to implement best practices, and to ensure clear
and complete communication of established policies and procedures to the university community.
- Provides support to related entities and agency companies to assist them with their ongoing accounting and analysis work,
internal and external reporting, tax filings, and other accounting and
administrative needs.
- Prepares annual consolidated financial statements, including any new
accounting/reporting requirements.
- Research technical accounting issues.
- Interfaces with external auditors to respond to their
informational and documentation requirements.
- Prepares the non-research sections of the Uniform Guidance Report.
- Prepares and files the university's annual State template and eZ-Audit filing.
- Completes various surveys.
- Coordinates the preparation of the annual Equity in Athletics and NCAA reports and oversees their
submission.
- Performs as manager of, or a primary contributor to, special projects that arise from time to time, with the objective of completing each project efficiently and
effectively and, if the project is the precursor to a recurring
activity, of establishing appropriate policies and procedures for the future
work requirements.
- Participates in the F&A Rate Proposal Team to assist in the scrub of Banner Finance accounts and provide such other analytical assistance as needed.
- Provides input and information needed for project teamwork
related to ERP system enhancements, upgrades and replacements.
- Recommends enhancements to Banner Finance and COGNOS reports
in order to enhance the usefulness of the system and the value of the
information it provides.
- Performs such other tasks as needed from time to time.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Degree in Accounting. Minimum of eight years of progressive, relevant accounting, financial reporting and management experience.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, preferably as it relates to the higher education industry and fund accounting.
- Experience in the preparation of management reports and external financial statements.
- Knowledge of the functioning of accounting systems and of the techniques of financial analysis and project management.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- At the
university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be
exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the
university, an equivalent combination of education and experience
specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA or Masters of Accountancy strongly preferred.
- A minimum of eight years of progressive accounting and management experience, preferably in a college or university.
- Knowledge of/experience with Banner Finance and COGNOS preferred.
- Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards.
