Introduction

The Prince William County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (DPRT) has an exciting opportunity for part-time employment as an Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Instructor.

This position offers a unique opportunity for candidates to work in an integral role with an award-winning aquatics team. We train over 400 lifeguards annually and maintain the highest possible professional skills across our eight aquatic facilities.

Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to be self-motivated and have a history of reliable work ethic. Candidates should have previously met, or exceeded, all previous work commitments, including but not limited to: internal and external audits, performance in high-pressure situations, and attendance at in-service per program requirements. Applicants should be able to readily adapt or evolve to changing situations, display maturity, and possess critical problem-solving skills. Instructors must be able to meet deadlines, create and plan for trainings ahead of time, and be willing to work mornings, nights, and weekends in multiple environments and conditions across multiple facilities throughout the DPRT organization.

Applicants must be 18 years old and currently be licensed as an Ellis & Associates Lifeguard. Candidates should have held that certification for the last six months, or for two years at a seasonal operating facility.

Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Instructor candidates are required to teach a minimum of two lifeguard courses per training season, as well as, a minimum of one two-hour in-service session per month. Additional availability may be required or otherwise adjusted during the months of seasonal facility operation.

This class is part of the Recreation Job Family. Incumbents performs routine work in connection with various recreation programs or activities. Instructors in this classification teach beginner and intermediate aquatic classes. Example; preschool, learn to swim, private swim, lifeguard training courses etc. May provide daily upkeep and light maintenance of equipment and facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable code of conduct rules; providing customer services. Work is performed in accordance with set procedures and guidelines, and deviation from those guidelines require approval.

1.Carrying out program plans, activities, and lessons. Sets up equipment or materials needed for a class and cleans up after program.

2.Provides excellence in customer service by answering questions and providing information to the public.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Dependent on course requirements. Minimum of 1 year instructional experience in related program area. Requires complex certification with regular additional training or education for maintenance of certification.

May require a State/Federal background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: May require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
