Position Summary:
Work as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Forensic Science Initiative (FSI) - a 15-week offering organized by the Center for Pre-College Programs and the Forensic Science Program within the Department of Chemistry & Environmental Science at NJIT. The FSI program uses Forensic Science to strengthen underserved public high school students' STEM knowledge, skills, and preparation for college work. Program participants are rising 12th graders from five public high schools within the Newark and Orange school districts. TAs work collaboratively with the project team to hold recitation sessions, facilitate learning, grade assignments & exams, help with scheduling guest speakers, SAT/ACT tutoring, assist with homework, career exploration, and college preparatory/readiness skills development for a group of up to 24 high school students. Employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check. There are 2 Teaching Assistant (TA) positions available.

Essential Functions:
1. Evaluates and monitors students' performance and attendance in class.
2. Assists Professor in evaluating students' classroom assignments, final projects, quiz and test results.
3. Counsels and mentors students, with a personal emphasis on building positive bonds while remaining sensitive to any and all difficulties they may have.
4. Assists students in STEM problem solving and critical thinking during class time, recitation, and tutoring.
5. Conducts instruction in SAT/ACT test preparation, gap skills, career exploration, academic counseling, college application, and financial aid.
6. Assists in developing students' communication, study, and time management skills, executive function skills, and assists in the development of 21st century life skills embedded in classes, where appropriate.
7. Helps students to increase their STEM skills and college readiness proficiency such as problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
8. Attends all staff development and training sessions.
9. Assists in creating a healthy social and psychological learning environment that will facilitate the desire to learn and help students develop cognitive, affective, and psychosocial skills such as self-efficacy, self-advocacy, goal setting, time management, etc.
10. Assists in the administration and evaluation of assessment instruments.
11. Serves as an informal mentor by leading by example to support and assist students as encouragement for college readiness, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
12. Assists participants in developing realistic career/academic goals and expectations.
13.Accompanies participants on field trips and other activities related to the program, when applicable.

Additional Functions:
Teaching Assistants are required to attend all general meetings with program directors and staff, training sessions, parent/student orientation, and a final exam during finals week.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college for fall 2022 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate strong forensic science skills. Applicants must have successfully passed FRSC 201 with a grade of B or better and be available to work the duration of the Fall semester from 2:30-4:40 pm. Applicants must be familiar with Canvas, WebEx, and Microsoft Office.
