Our Global Genetically Engineered Models (GEM) Team within Comparative Medicine (CM) supports the expansion of animal science, preclinical care, and research model development furthering research across the world. We are the innovation incubator within in vivo pre-clinical research and are the central partner for in vivo scientific input, organizing and performing all in vivo activities.
The Research Scientist role is a highly technical and/or specialized professional position responsible for supporting 14 disease areas including oncology, neuroscience and cardiovascular medicine, providing high quality & consistent in vivo technical research support within our multi-building, multi-discipline research program. This role will perform supplemental tasks in assisting the Manager and other delegated programmatic oversight duties as specified.
Your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
*Working closely with the Novartis research community to manage and optimize breeding colonies of genetically modified rodent models intended for in vivo study use. *Supporting genetic testing laboratory (i.e. processing biopsy tissue, PCR testing, qPCR testing, analysis of results, recording data, etc.). *Performing hands-on technical in vivo work supporting rodent breeding, embryology, and microinjection (i.e. compound administration, tissue collection, animal identification, clinical observation, etc.) *Responsible for ensuring compliance with all institutional and regulatory protocols, policies, and guidelines. *Regularly complete literature reviews to maintain familiarity with the latest technologies focused on improving current in vivo disease modeling. *Conduct presentations of data and results to the Genetically Engineered Models group and project teams. *Other duties and responsibilities as may be required.

Minimum requirements What you'll bring to the role: *4-year Science degree or 2-year degree in Veterinary Sciences with an equivalent combination of experience along with higher education *2 to 5 years of experience working in animal research environment preferred. The level of the position will be commensurate with experience. *ALAT Certification desirable or pursued after start *Advanced understanding of genetically engineered rodent models with a focus on breeding colony management, with a firm understanding of model creation pipeline from the generation of founder animals to planning and production of study cohorts preferred *Proven background with in-life technical procedure skills being able to prepare, handle, administer compounds by various basic methods (e.g. SC, IP, IM) *Preferred experience working in a molecular biology laboratory and/or rodent microinjection laboratory *Experience with operating within a barrier-maintained facility carrying out in vivo studies utilizing micro-isolator techniques *Detail oriented, knowledgeable around the IACUC/AWC compliance, regulation, able to utilize paper and electronic study protocols, document experiments in laboratory notebook *Advanced computer skills using Excel, OneDrive, Word and Outlook, being able to collect and record research data having the ability and knowledge to review documentation as a quality control *Working knowledge of federal, state, local (Animal Welfare) laws, departmental SOP's and Good Laboratory Practices *Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work from a standing position for prolonged time periods and perform repetitive motion tasks. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather.
