JOB TITLE: Development Coach

DEPARTMENT: Player Development

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, Pitching Initiatives

LOCATION: Mesa, AZ

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of the Development Coach shall include, but not be limited to:

In-Season

  • Aiding and assisting in the daily operation of both the technology and baseball activities at their respective affiliate:
    • Interpreting and providing live feedback for any piece of technology
    • Assisting in on-field baseball activities as appropriate, including throwing batting practice, hitting fungos, etc.
  • Assist in the analysis and leveraging of information as it pertains to pitching development:
    • Monitoring and analyzing player plans for pitchers, including evaluation of progress towards goals and deriving of data insights to aid pitchers in achieving those goals
    • Providing daily reports on the prior day's game outings and bullpens, leveraging pitch and biomechanical data, high-speed video, etc.
    • Performing other ad-hoc analyses as requested by PD managers
  • Assist in the analysis and leveraging of information as it pertains to hitting development:
    • Monitoring and analyzing player plans for hitters, including evaluation of progress towards goals and deriving of data insights to aid players in achieving those goals
    • Providing periodic analysis of batted ball and biomechanical data on individual hitters
    • Performing other ad-hoc analyses as requested by PD managers
  • Lead the creation of periodic Player Plan Assessments presented to players throughout the season denoting their progress towards goals and highlighting development opportunities
  • Assist in the advanced scouting process, including finding pitch tips, providing insight on the opposing team's hitters and pitchers, etc.
  • Assist in the analysis of the following areas as appropriate:
    • Sports Science data
    • Defense
    • In-game strategy
  • Support PD and R&D managers as needed

Off-Season

  • Attend any off-season camps filling the Development Coach role as needed
  • Perform broader research into any player development areas as appropriate
  • Partake in continued educational opportunities, including attending external presentations/conventions, further exposure to internal research, etc.

Travel expectations: During the baseball season, the Development Coach shall adhere to the schedule at his or her respective minor league affiliate, including attending all practices, home games, and travel with the team on away trips. During the off-season, this position is stationed at the baseball complex in Mesa, Arizona.
