DESCRIPTION

UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 preacademic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and SkaggsSchool of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high throughout genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Drs. Robin Knight, Eugene Yeo, and Louise Laurent, established the EXCITE lab, a high-output clinical COVID-19 testing, sequencing, and immune response assay laboratory. The incumbent will serve as a developer for the web-based laboratory information management system for this laboratory.

This position uses skills as an advanced, specialized programming professional with an in-depth understanding of Django Web Framework and relational databases to identify and resolve a wide range of highly complex issues / software bugs where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. May lead or mentor a team of bioinformatics programming professionals. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 9 years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus 5 years of related experience/training.

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures. Proven experience with developing web applications using Django Framework. Proven experience with application development and deployment procedures. Experience with mark up languages such as HTML or XML. In-depth knowledge in area of expertise with an understanding and advanced ability to independently analyze a needs requirement, develop, and implement systems for complex applications. Proven skill to plan and carry out projects to completion in a time sensitive environment.

  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation. Demonstrated experience with scripting language such as Python. Proven experience with software development full life cycle, architecture, design, object-orientation, documentation, continuous integration and deployment.

  • Advanced understanding of relational databases, web interfaces and operating systems. Expertise in scientific programming. Proven record of producing and delivering well-designed scientific software in an industrial or academic environment.

  • Advanced project management skills. Excellent organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a large volume of work efficiently and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Demonstrated ability to develop, organize, and track projects and coordinate complex activities requiring a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.

  • In-depth knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.

  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Advanced ability to interface with management on a regular basis.

  • Ability to lead a team, meet deadlines and demonstrate advanced problem solving skills. Demonstrated experience to troubleshoot and problem solve in computational work.

  • In-depth knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

  • Proven ability to work in a Unix environment.

  • Strong experience with the design, development, and maintenance of data collections used for data storage and analysis in a biomedical research environment.

  • Proven ability to work in a Unix environment.

  • Knowledge of CLIA and HIPAA compliance regulations.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $87,000 - $202,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $41.67 - $97.03

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
