The Research Assistant will conduct participant-centered research and administrative activities in support of the Seattle Vaccine Trials Unit (VTU), performing clinical tasks, supporting the conduct of research participant visits and sample collection, carrying out moderately complex research assignments, and assisting in study implementation.

The VTU Research Assistant will work under the direction of the VTU Operations Manager, with project-specific supervision by protocol-specific study coordinators. Project and study-specific issues will be referred to the supervisor for support and and/or guidance as necessary. The position will involve work in multiple clinic locations, including at Fred Hutch's main campus in South Lake Union and at Cabrini Medical Tower on First Hill. The position will require willingness to work with COVID-19 and HIV prevention modalities (vaccines, immunoprophylaxis, etc) as well as working in settings where individuals with active COVID-19 infection are seen for study visits.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

    Schedule participants for study visits within protocol-required timeframes. Scheduling may occur in person or by phone/text/email, and may involve coordination with the research laboratory, the pheresis center, and/or other facilities (e.g. UW or Harborview).
  • Prepare clinician rooms, charts, blood collection supplies and requisitions as needed for specific protocols conducted by the VTU.
  • Obtain and record clinical research data consistent with Good Clinical Practice, study sponsor and protocol requirements.
  • Prepare and coordinate laboratory specimens for delivery to various laboratories.
  • Maintain logs and records for shipping diagnostic and research samples.
  • Maintain clinical supplies and prepare locations for blood draws and protocol-specific procedures.
  • Conduct scribe activities for data collection in support of clinicians who are conducting study visits.
  • Monitor and provide calendar support for clinicians, pharmacy, and the research laboratory to communicate accurate real-time information about specimen collection and transport.
  • Work closely with other Research Assistants, Medical Assistants, and/or Clinic Assistants to provide adequate support coverage for research visits.
  • Assist with maintaining participants' charts and files.
  • Assist Data Lead with special data-related projects as needed.
  • Perform administrative duties: processing participants' lab results, filing charts, updating materials in manuals and binders.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and other meetings as needed.
  • Follow and communicate via email (Outlook), MS Teams, texts and calls.
  • Assist Outreach Team with pre-screening activities for potential candidates for studies, and ordering supplies for recruitment and various community events.
  • Maintain training in Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA), Blood-Borne Pathogens (BBP), Packaging and Shipping Diagnostic and Biological Samples, Human Subjects Protection (HSP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other trainings as required by study sponsors, Fred Hutch, and VTU Standard Operating Procedures.


Qualifications

  • High school or equivalent diploma required. BS or BA degree preferred
  • Minimum of two years' relevant experience required. Experience in a clinical or laboratory setting preferred. In addition, new graduates with relevant course or project work are encouraged to apply.
  • Willingness to undergo phlebotomy training.
  • A high degree of organizational skill, logical thinking, and close attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work well in a team and with research study participants.
  • Computer skills - including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, ability to learn and use other online research tools.
  • Willingness to be flexible in working hours, including working some early mornings, occasional evenings and weekends.
