Unit Technician - Med Surg

Summary

This position works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN). The unit technician performs and assists with individual activities of daily living as well as certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse according to established policies, procedures and guidelines. Maintains adequate levels of supplies per established levels and runs errands for the nit when necessary. Acts as receptionist for the unit by answering inquiries, offering assistance and providing directions to patients, visitors, other departments, families, other nursing staff and physicians in a friendly and cooperative manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(5%)* Maintains adequate levels of all supplies in patient servers and closets on each shift according to control list. Ensures that the servers are maintained in a neat and orderly manner.

(5%)* Assists in returning/obtaining needed supplies/equipment to/from other departments as needed (e.g., Dietary, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy, Materials Management, Central Processing, etc.)

(5%)* Assists in pulling and returning old charts to Health Information Department.

(5%)* Distributes water to patients appropriately and on a timely basis.

(5%)* Assists in keeping hallways of nursing units uncluttered and clear of inappropriate furniture/equipment, etc.

(5%)* Reports to RN patient concerns or other pertinent information regarding the condition of patients on a timely basis.

(5%)* Assists in cleaning charts and organizing and cleaning the nurses' station.

(5%)* Obtains linen from extra linen cart in Environmental Services to fill patient servers, supply closets, and linen cart as needed.

(5%)* Accounts for all RN+ units. If not in patient use, assures that unit is plugged into battery charger.

(5%)* Assures that temperature log for patient refrigeration / freezer is maintained daily.

(5%)* Communicates messages to unit nursing personnel and therapists regarding patients/patient care-related activities; runs errands for the unit when necessary. This includes assisting with obtaining supplies, requisitions, equipment, blood products, medications, etc.

(5%)* Coordinates appointments for patients with other Hospital Departments, as appropriate.

(5%)* In a timely manner, notifies the appropriate Department of new orders, either by entering in electronic medical record or telephone.

(5%)* Communicates new physician orders to RN/MLPN/MHT-2, such as changes in medication and/or diet, treatments, activity orders, procedures and STAT or now orders, etc.

(5%)* Notifies appropriate physician/department of orders for consultation.

(5%)* Answers/utilizes the unit telephone, intercom/patient call system and hospital paging system appropriately.

(5%)* Acts as receptionist for the unit by answering inquiries, offering assistance and providing directions to patients, visitors, other departments, families, other nursing staff and physicians in a friendly and cooperative manner.

(3%)* Ensures that Kardexes are kept up to date and complete.

(3%)* Files all reports on the patient's medical record, accurately and on a timely basis.

(3%)* Transcribes physicians' orders to the Kardex and appropriate areas of electronic medical record accurately.

(3%)* They will assist with set-up for non-scheduled C-sections.

(3%)* Assists staff with placement of non-invasive monitoring devices.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

BLS certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer date.

1) New hires on or after April 1, 2020 will be required to have a current CNA certification and keep it active.

2) Current Unit Technicians as of April 1, 2020 who do not have a current CNA will be grandfathered in and not required to obtain the certification as long as they stay in their current classification.

3) Current Unit Technicians as of April 1, 2020 who do have a current and active CNA will be required to maintain and keep active their certification as long as they are in their current classification.

4) Internal transfers after on or after April 1, 2020 will be required to obtain the certification within six (6) months of their transfer date. Once obtaining their certification, they will be required to maintain and keep the certification active while in employed in either classification.

High School Diploma or GED required.

Previous direct patient care experience preferred.

Medical terminology or related experience preferred.

Operates equipment as outlined on orientation checklists, policy and procedures.

Participates in equipment in-services and competencies as they relate to role expectations.

Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement as required by the Medical Center and the job description.

Understands and is accountable for Medical Center's customer service standards.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.

May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.

Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Medium.

Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
