Introduction

The Prince William County Public Works, Solid Waste Division is seeking t o hire a Scalehouse Operator to work at either the County's Landfill or Balls Ford Road Compost Facility in Manassas, Virginia. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of full-time experience with cash handling and customer service. ABOUT THIS ROLE:

This position works with a team of other employees responsible for operating all functions of the scalehouse including data management software and computerized vehicle scales. The Scalehouse Operator is typically the first point of contact for customers using the County's landfill or compost facility. The successful candidate will answer customers' questions, accurately assess and collect fees, enter required data into the scale software system, reconcile receipts at the end of the shift, and prepare deposits and other documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma is required.
• Minimum 2 years of full-time experience with cash handling and computer-based data entry.
• Minimum 2 years of front-line customer service experience in a fast-paced or high-pressure environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Strong basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Knowledge of proper cash handling procedures and reconciliation of receipts.
• Exceptional attention to detail and ability to perform accurate computer data entry.
• Proficiency using computers and related software applications.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and adapt to change.
• Excellent customer service skills including ability to maintain composure and tact when faced with difficult people or situations.
• Ability to follow direction, work effectively as part of a team, and communicate respectfully with coworkers and the public at all times.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position is considered to be an essential, on-call employee. A background check and credit check are conditions of employment for this position.

This job requires willingness and ability to work in an environment that may include exposure to noise, dust, odors, moving vehicles, and inclement weather. Work may require repetitive motion and prolonged sitting or standing.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

Work schedules are determined based on coverage of landfill and compost facility operations, which are seven days a week, 361 days a year. Employees are eligible for overtime and holiday pay. Working overtime, as well as some holidays and weekends is required depending on staffing levels, assigned shift, and workload.

Scalehouse Operator teams work either Monday through Friday or Wednesday through Sunday. The teams rotate these shifts each month. Work hours are generally 5:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. or 10:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Work hours vary depending upon staffing levels.
