Position Summary

TaxAct, a subsidiary of Blucora and sister company to Avantax Wealth Management and Avantax Planning Partners is seeking a Tax Analyst II. The Tax Analyst II is responsible for maintaining existing tax programs and related products ensuring offering is in compliance with taxing agencies regulations and guidelines within established deadlines. The person in this role, researches, analyzes and interprets federal and state tax legislation, code, regulations, forms and instructions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Major responsibilities of the position are listed below. To perform the job successfully, the individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties, assignments and specific projects may be assigned at the discretion of executive management.

  • Applies standard practices and procedures to implement moderate tax product changes via code and internal software.
  • Able to learn and perform unit testing and quality assurance checks to ensure that no unintended changes are introduced during the annual update cycle.
  • Proactively seeks and obtains guidance from more experienced team members and uses these opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Work in a team environment using Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Complete an expected level of work within the sprint.
  • Identifies, proposes and implements process improvements in their team or work area.
  • Manage time and priorities to make sure all work is completed.
  • Properly tests user stories to where the team does not need to review basic work.
  • Provides quality assurance testing in other areas of the TaxAct product besides what he or she is currently working on.
  • Provides ideas on how to make the TaxAct products better.
  • Provides quality answers to customer emails regarding basic tax issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Strong understanding of federal and state taxation, preferably in multiple tax categories: Individual, business, non-profit, estates and trusts, etc.
  • 3+ years income tax preparation or analysis experience.
  • Previous in-depth utilization of tax preparation software is highly preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Moderate level of understanding of software best practices and coding techniques.
  • Possess or able to quickly learn and apply tax content development tools (both print and electronic filing).
  • Possess or able to quickly learn testing processes to validate work, whether automated or manual.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, which translates into the ability to partner for commitment and action, communication, as well as listening.
  • BS/BA in Business Accounting, or Computer Science or equivalent related experience.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • CPA or EA certification a plus.
  • Previous exposure and development coding software. Coding tax software specifically is a significant plus.
