Internally, this position will have management responsibility over the accounting operations and financial reporting functions of the University. External relationships include developing and maintaining a positive rapport with the external financial auditors, responding to external requests from OSC, UNC-GA, OSBM, NC Office of the State Auditor, NACUBO, rating agencies, etc. This is a highly technical accounting position that is responsible for formulating and implementing university financial policies and plans for use by management in decision-making processes. This position will apply the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards and guidance in decision making and provides overall direction for the accounting functions and financial systems involving all University fund sources, and ensures that all financial operations, systems, transactions, policies, and procedures meet the objectives of the university and that they are in compliance with all oversight or regulatory entity standards and requirements. Specifically, this position will review and monitor state fund, institutional trust fund, and special funds activity and respond to campus community questions regarding accounting theory and practical applications. This position will supervise Financial Services CPA licensed accountants who specialize in institutional trust fund accounting, special fund accounting, state funds accounting (including NCAS certification), debt accounting, finance data mart, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, and capital improvement accounting. This person will provide leadership in the development of control guidelines and accounting programs in financial, program operation, systems or other areas. Administrative direction is provided in the preparation of activity and progress reports for executive management and technical direction may be provided for controversial, sensitive and/or precedent setting issues. Human resources responsibilities include: ensuring compliance with human resources policies and procedures and allocating available staff, assets and resources in order to meet work goals. This position must deal tactfully with controversial issues/problems and maintain a successful working relationship with clients, other employees, administrators and the public. The hired candidate may have an opportunity to work a Hybrid/Flexible schedule (not fully remote) after adequate training and an acceptable performance evaluations. Minimum Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance or other discipline related to the area of assignment with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework and three years of professional accounting experience, of which at least one is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional credit hours of accounting coursework. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Graduation from four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, finance, or business administration and four years of experience in supervising the accounting process and generating financial statements. Prior experience in governmental, higher education, or public accounting is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required as well as the ability to work in a cooperative fashion with peers, subordinates and superiors. CPA license.
